Craps Guide – How to Play

Craps Game

Craps is a casino game played with dice on a special table. Two dice are rolled and the players wager on the outcome against the bank or house. Four attendants conduct the game of craps. The person who handles the chips is known as the boxman. The bets on either side of the table are accepted by two base dealers. The outcome of the roll are declared by the stickman who stands at the end of the table. The craps table has a special layout with different areas for placing different kinds of bets.

The players take turns in rolling the dice. The player who rolls the dice is called the shooter. At certain outcome of the dice the next player becomes the shooter. Before the dice are rolled, the players predict the outcome. In some bets the predictions are made for one roll, whereas in other bets, the predictions are made over a series of rolls. If the predicted outcome materializes then the player is paid as per the payout table.

Craps are usually played in the formal environment of a casino, where it is the practice to follow the etiquette. However craps is also played informally in a more fun way. Here side bets among the players takes the place of playing against the house.

Craps Etiquette

For those who play in the casino, dice-handling etiquette is very important. Players can handle the dice with one hand only. The correct way of ‘rolling’ the dice is to toss them so that they bounce of the wall at the far end of the table. Sliding them across the table is not allowed. Even while tossing the dice, they cannot be thrown above the eye level. There are certain areas where the dice should not land. These include the boxman’s bank and the working money stacks. Craps etiquette may vary from casino to casino. For example if a die hits a player during a roll, certain casinos allow it and others do not. Some casinos allow the shooter to set the dice to a particular configuration before rolling, whereas others do not.

It is important to know both the craps rules and craps etiquette before playing.
